King Ato the Eighth is the monarch of Octagon Island in the Nonestic Ocean.

Description

For a king, Ato is unusually casual and unpretentious. Jovial and rotund, he weighs 250 pounds. He is devoted to the art of cooking and eating good food. His close companion is Roger the Read Bird. Apart from the (minimal) responsibilities of ruling Octagon Island, he also serves as cook aboard the Crescent Moon, the ship of Captain Samuel Salt. And though Ato is rather lazy by nature, the sea air and change of circumstances seem to have a positive effect upon him; he is an effective cook and a useful shipmate. Background

In Pirates in Oz, Ruth Plumly Thompson tells us that Ato grew a beard during his first voyage on the Crescent Moon. However, John R. Neill draws him without a beard.
