Droopy

Droopy "Happy Hound" McPoodle is an animated character from the golden age of American animation. He is an anthropomorphic white Basset Hound with a droopy face, although he is sometimes given the surname Poodle or McPoodle. He was created in 1943 by Tex Avery for 24 theatrical cartoon shorts produced by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon studio, ending with the studio's termination in 1958. Droopy moves slowly and lethargically, speaks in a jowly monotone voice, and—though hardly an imposing character—is shrewd enough to outwit his enemies. When finally roused to anger, often by a bad guy (such as Butch) laughing heartily at him, Droopy is capable of beating adversaries many times his size with a comical thrashing.

Since 1980, Droopy has sporadically returned to the screen, often alongside Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse.

Both Droopy and Butch are voiced by Joe Alaskey in Tom and Jerry & The Wizard of Oz and Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz.

Oz-related biography

Droopy was a quasi-anthropomorphic dog from Kansas, who got sucked up by the same tornado as Dorothy Gale, Toto, Tom Cat, and Jerry Mouse. Butch got a job alongside his pal Butch as mercenary guards for the Castle of the Wicked Witch of the West, alongside the Winkies. The dogs left the castle after Dorothy destroyed the Witch. Butch was content to stay in Oz, and never sought to return to Kansas. (Tom and Jerry & The Wizard of Oz).

Butch and Droopy eventually took employment with King Ruggedo of the Nome Kingdom. The two dogs quit Ruggedo's service when ordered to toss Dorothy and the Scarecrow into a pit full of sharp stones. They later placed themselves before the mercy of Oz the Great and Powerful, who gave them jobs as stablehands for the Horse of a Different Color. (Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz)
